Head to Toe Kitchen Makeover Part 1

Well it has been radio silence here on the blog all summer and you’ll see why. We  drove from Colorado to central Florida and spent 4 weeks renovating my mom’s kitchen this summer. Yes, I’m crazy… I planned on blogging my way through but realized real quick – that’s a lot easier said than done and I’m not the multitasker I once was.

Here’s the before…20160205_104022 20160205_104329

The first thing to go was this wall dividing the kitchen from the the dining and living space. We actually got this wall out the 1st day we were there. I think this made us a little over confident and we didn’t push as hard as we needed to to finish on time.

I had the best time playing around in Sketchup and this was my dream for the space…

So what’s with the pops of red you ask? Well that me trying to incorporate my mom’s personality into the space. She owns every red kitchen item known to man…  No really everything is red from the can opener to the Roomba!

I have to admit I bit off more than I could chew with this reno… It resulted in us driving back from our beach vacation and staying an additional week to get everything done.  I praise the Lord for the hubs being able to work remotely and helping everything into the wee hours of the morning…

When all was said and done the end result was really nice and there was no major unfinished issues. Bad news is that we had some of the worst tradesmans ever! It was so painful at times.

Are ready for the after pictures!?  Stay tuned…

My Favorite DIY: Art Sliders

I wanted to share my favorite DIY project of all time. This project was super easy and with big impact. The supplies can be found at your local hardware store and be done in an hour or two. Want to learn how I did it? Read all about on Julepoutput_5Z9ETu (1)

Now you don’t…

photo-1431960128106-aab3b6cf9b4aIs there anyone else out there struggling to know how to vote in this upcoming Presidential election? In the interests of full disclosure, I make almost no social media political posts, except to recognize our military. One, I don’t feel like I have anything particularly wise to add to the discussion and two, I doubt a single person has ever changed a political view based on some of the negative back and forth I’ve seen out there. And let’s be honest, most of it is quite negative.

But, today, I break that political silence to ask for your help. Because I am torn. I do not know how I am going to vote. I know that voting is a privilege too few in this world are given. I do not want to take it for granted.

I am proud to be an American.  My dad’s family came over from Korea in the late 1800s for a better life. I am so grateful that they did. Even more, I am thankful to be a Christian living in America. I also have the extra blessing of being a military wife.

I am truly a “glass half full” type of person, but it’s getting harder to stay that way these days. This country was founded on Judeo-Christian values and yet I get criticized for wanting to uphold those very values. I know I am not looking to find a new pastor. But I still hope the leader of the United States (and perhaps the free world) would have similar values.

I have friends who support Trump and I have friends who support Clinton. There even seems to be no clear consensus among Christian friends either. I would consider all of these friends to be both intelligent and compassionate.

This is my struggle. What if my conscience won’t allow me to vote for anyone who is nominated? What if I don’t see anyone whose actions seem to support my own core values? (And by “voting” I mean giving this person my support, believing in their record, their integrity, trusting this person will put the interests of the country ahead of their personal agenda.)  Is that too much to ask for? Maybe my expectations are unrealistic that a leader should really be the best servant?

Should I just choose (excuse my lack of a better term) “the lesser of two evils”?

Should I not vote at all?

Should I vote by pencilling in someone I could support (Mike Rowe perhaps)?

I dunno.

Needless to say there are plenty of voices out there trying to tell us how to vote. Too many, amIright? How does a person filter through it all and vote their conscience?

But I can rest assured because I don’t place my ultimate hope in America’s next president. Romans 13:1 tell us that “there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”  (This reality does not prevent us, however, from getting a bad leader.) 1 Corinthians 10:31 says “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Personally, I’m gonna take that to include voting.

What will this all look like for you come November 8, 2016?

We would love to hear from you.  And let’s keep it classy and nice people.  Thanks in advance!

Here is the current state of our boys room. Although I really love the chalkboard wall I’m ready to change it all up. Because that’s what I do… Read all about the chalkboard wall DIY on momtastic.

Future plans are for bunk beds again to clear up some floor space. I think the theme will be explorers. My main design obstacle in the room is space. The room is just a tad too small for two. There’s only one good wall for the beds to be on. I’m slightly tempted to rip out the walk in closet and linen closet to gain more space, but that seems a bit over the top…

The other issue I’m facing is the carpet. I HATE carpet for so many reasons but the #1 reason is it’s so dirty. I don’t care how much you clean or vacuum. It just gets more filthy as time goes on. I’ve ripped up the carpet in a couple of our homes and only then will you know what is really going on with carpet… Ewww. I would love to put wood flooring to match the main level. But it’s pricey and I’m concerned about the noise level. I need to do something though and soon. Accidents have happened in the boys room and I’m reminded each time I walk up the stairs past their room, even though I just had the carpets professionally deep cleaned.

Do you have hardwood upstairs in the bedrooms with kids? Is the noise and echoing a pain? Do you miss carpeting? Would love your thoughts and insights.

So if you were following along. I was on the hunt for a modern farmhouse sectional. I had narrowed it down to three West Elm sectionals. Without further ado – the winner is…

We picked the Shelter Sectional by West Elm. The fabric is the Yarn Dyed Linen Weave, Shelter Blue although, the hubs would tell you it’s gray… It’s been about a month since we got it and I personally love it. It’s ample space for the entire gang to curl up on for family movie nights. I Scotch Guarded it from top to bottom to ensure messy hands and booger fingers clean up easy. Ew… I know!

Although we loved our previous west elm coffee table it was way too big for the space. We moved it down to the basement for now. I found this lovely REAL marble top table at Target on sale for $109. I could hardly believe it! The rug is Vintage Vibe from FLOR. They are actually carpet squares, which makes them so flexible to use and easy to clean when they inevitably get dirty… For some reason, picking a rug for this space was really difficult for me and I’ll get more into that whole story another time.

I’m wanting some new pillows our new lounging area. I’m thinking shibori and/or mud cloth… So what do you think? Did I make the right choice?
